How to use hashtags to boost brand visibility on social media

We love to use hashtags. There’s a fun side to it. Not only do you seem to be current when you use them on social media, it makes you appear to be on trend as well.

But how do you use hashtags to grow your brand’s visibility on social media? To understand this, I have broken down this article into three parts:

What is a hashtag?

hashtag is a type of metadata tag used on social media and other blogging/microblogging sites that allows users to apply unique user generated texts that could be alphanumeric in nature, which makes it possible for them to easily find or identify messages with a specific theme or trending topics and easily follow up on these topics 
Users create and use hashtags by placing the number sign or hash sign #  in front of a string of characters usually a word or unspaced phrase, at the beginning, in or at the end of a message. 

Why use a hashtag?

As stated earlier, a hashtag helps social media users identify trending topics and allows them follow up on these topics without undue stress of finding or searching for such topics on social media. Remember that social media is a community of millions of people worldwide. Imagine the trouble you’d have to go through to find a particular information on social media. Hashtags make it easier for you. 
In addition, if you were doing a research for instance on how a topic was discussed on social media during a certain period, hashtags help you gather your data better.
Also, hashtags help make an issue to resonate with people, thereby attracting them to a particular topic. For instance, a well written and catchy hashtag could be comic, ironic, funny, offensive, etc and it immediately draws people’s attention to the issue you wish to discuss and before you say jack, you and your topic are trending. ๐Ÿ˜
Okay, enough of the whys. Let’s go to the most important issue, the How. 

How to use hashtags to boost brand social media visibility 

1. Choose a catchy phrase or word that represents your brand.: It’s okay to use ten hashtags on your social media posts that expresses how you feel about your products or services. But, the lesser the better. Identify a word or phrase that captures those feelings or thoughts in one. 
2. Use your unique hashtag on every post. The more you use a particular hashtag, the better your chances of having it resonate with people and motivating them to use it too. 
3. Identify trending topics or hashtags you can use in your own posts that does not derail from the main focus of the trending hashtag. For instance, if you own a law firm and there is a trending hashtag on a legal issue, you might want to use it as you tweet either about the topic itself or your services.
4. Don’t use any trending hashtag indiscriminately. Don’t use them simply because they are trending when they do not have any relationship with your business. Use hashtags wisely.
5. In every social media ad campaign you do, always use your unique hashtag and any other related trending one that relates with your message.
